CD Review: Jeff Lorber Fusion – Now is the time

June 27, 2010

Oh the days of old (early 80’s) when we jazz lovers would drop everything and head to a venue and see Jeff Lorber Fusion perform. I recall three concerts at the Exit-In (Nashville) where we all were happily packed into the small confine of the famous night spot. During that period Jeff’s band consisted of Jeff Lorber-Keyboards, Dennis Bradford –Drums, Danny Wilson -Electric Bass and Kenny Gorelick (Kenny G) alto & tenor saxophone, Flute. We partied to the sounds of the Soft Space, Wizard Island and Water Sign albums. Now Is The Time is a reflection of the old experience with a twist of now.

It’s only fitting to jumpstart this cd with “Rain Dance/Wanna Fly”. The groove is nasty with the added vocals of Irene B. You can feel the fusion vibe in Jeff’s new composition “Dr. Moy”. The instruments flow with the energy of a revitalized band. The tracks that will be added to my road trip mix are “Pixel” and “Sugar Free”. This will be a welcome addition to my ipod.

Jeff spices it up with the addition of Weather Report’s “Mysterious Traveller”. This track hit the spot bringing back memories of Shorter and Zawinul and Pastorius.

One of my favorite Jeff Lorber Fusion tracks is “Curtains” and it is remarkable how the “Before We Go” lyrics were added to this instrumental sung by Irene B. Another fusion favorite “Black Ice” cools off this hot mix of killer tracks.

Jeff show cases his remarkable keyboarding with Las Rosas and Chinese Medicinal Herbs. You can feel that Jeff truly enjoyed making this project. Wrapping it with “Water Sign” an old crown pleaser, you can’t help but get on you feet and dance to this. Jeff leaves you with the upbeat “Sumatra” as a reminder that this cd has a special place in your collection. A job well done Jeff!

Jeff Lorber Fusion is:

Jeff Lorber keyboards

Jimmy Haslip Bass

Eric Marienthal sax

Randy Brecker trumpet

Paul Jackson Jr. guitar

Dave Weckl drums

Irene B. vocals

The Roots to release new album

June 17, 2010

To call it “long-awaited” or “eagerly anticipated” would be the understatement of the year – as hip-hop’s most daring pioneers the Roots release their 9th studio album (and third for Def Jam Recordings) on June 22nd, HOW I GOT OVER. The album, which takes its name from Clara Ward’s gospel classic (made popular by Mahalia Jackson), is the Roots’ first new release since joining Late Night with Jimmy Fallon for a full time gig as the show’s house band.

Grammy Award winners the Roots characterize the songs on HOW I GOT OVER as “depicting the everyman’s search for hope in this dispiriting post-hope zeitgeist”.

The lead single from the Roots new set will be “Dear God 2.0.” The track re-imagines the Monsters Of Folk song “Dear God” and features MOF members Yim Yames from My Morning Jacket, Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis from Bright Eyes and M. Ward.

HOW I GOT OVER also includes two appearances from Grammy-winning soul man John Legend: “Doin’ It Again” a re-working of his track “Again,” and “The Fire,” an original song written for the Roots’ 2010 Olympic concert performance.

The Roots and Legend have developed a strong musical bond, as the group has produced John’s entire upcoming release Wake Up, which shares the socially conscious themes of the “How I Got Over” set and is comprised of late sixties/early seventies covers.

Other guests on HIGO include Joanna Newsom on “Right On,” Phonte Coleman (Little Brother, The Foreign Exchange), Blu (Blu & Exile), Peedi Peedi , Mercedes Martinez, Icelandic alt-pop singer Patty Crash, newcomer Sugar Tongue Slim as well as long time Roots’ Crew members Dice Raw, Truck North and P.O.R.N.

DIERKS BENTLEY GOES “UP ON THE RIDGE”
WITH THE RELEASE OF HIS
FIFTH STUDIO ALBUM ON JUNE 8

Music Critics Praise UP ON THE RIDGE Even Before Its Release

Upcoming Appearances include Imus In The Morning, TODAY, CBS Sunday Morning, Jimmy Kimmel Live, CMA Music Festival and the Telluride Bluegrass Festival

Nashville, TN – June 4, 2010 – Country music maverick Dierks Bentley is prepping for the release of his fifth Capitol Nashville studio album, the artistically daring bluegrass-influenced UP ON THE RIDGE, out June 8.

“I set out to make an album that wasn’t defined by genre and did my best to break down what people’s preconceptions were about what ‘bluegrass’ music can sound like,” explains Bentley.  “It’s so awesome to see the single hit the Top 30 and climb up the country radio charts and to see fans get really excited about a fresh sound.  I didn’t know what the reception would be…I just set out to make a great album.  I couldn’t be prouder of the outcome…the whole process has been magical.”

Much more than just a bluegrass concept album, the new disc features Bentley working with some of the finest acoustic musicians in the world. Bentley penned five of the album’s 12 tracks and artfully covered songs by such unlikely sources as Bob Dylan and U2.  The award winning singer/songwriter also collaborated with musical heavyweights Alison Krauss, Kris Kristofferson, Sam Bush, Vince Gill, Miranda Lambert, Jamey Johnson and bluegrass legend Del McCoury for the album.  Working with an award-winning singer/songwriter/producer Jon Randall Stewart and world-class recording engineer Gary Paczosa, Bentley has crafted an album with rooted familiarity as well as big surprises.

Even before its June 8 release, the country’s top music critics are already hailing it as “masterpiece country album.”

USA TODAY picked it as the stand-alone country album in their “Top 12 albums of Summer” list.

People Magazine has awarded it as the “critic’s choice” giving it 3.5 out of 4 stars.

Country Weekly says “At once artistic, interesting and highly listenable, this album is a landmark
masterpiece for Dierks.”

Billboard says “…the combination of Bentley’s vision and an impressive list of
collaborators results in a fascinating detour.”

Washington Post calls it one of the more “remarkable major label country albums.”

Music Row concludes, “The first masterpiece country album of 2010…the whole collection is brilliant.”

Bentley’s promo schedule kicks off in New York City on Mon., June 7 with a five song performance of the new material on Imus In The Morning, followed by a visit to NBC’s TODAY.   He will also tape a special performance for ABC’s CMA MusicFest: Country’s Night to Rock, which will air on the network later in the summer, before making his way to the Telluride Bluegrass Festival next week.  Other upcoming appearances this month include a profile on CBS Sunday Morning, the one hour GAC Special Dierks Bentley: Up On The Ridge and a two song performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Visit www.dierks.com for pre-sale info, behind-the-scenes videos and for more on the upcoming album.

From The Mouse: Nnenna Freelon Review

May 4, 2010

Nnenna Freelon, “Homefree”

The singing baton Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald and Carmen McRae carried has been passed on to Nnenna Freelon. I have been a fan since I saw her in concert on the same bill with Al Jarreau in Atlanta years back. Beauty, style, elegance, grace and add talent to the equation equals Nnenna Freelon. The new CD Homefree showcases the versatility of the accomplished singer, you get jazz standards, the blues, a show tune, a freedom movement standard and an even selection with a reggae beat.

The intro selection “The Lamp Is Low” charges at you with a savvy that is so typical of Nnenna Freelon. That’s the style that returns her fans time after time. From Westside Story “I Feel Pretty” is a favorite and great choice. What’s fantastic about her rendition is the tight jazzy arrangement and Roy Codrington is killer on flugelhorn.

The love songs will knock you off your feet and are place well on the track list- The Very Thought of You, Theme from the Valley of the Dolls, Smile and Skylark – these are wonderful selections.

The track written by Nnenna “Cell Phone Blues” is reminding that you get no sugar if you don’t put the cell phone down. It’s a fun song that I will want to hear the next time I see her in concert.  Cole Porter’s “Get out of Town” has a reggae/New Orleans feel that Nnenna arranges well. Homefree tops it off with two anthems Lift Every Voice and Sing and America the Beautiful. This is the seventh Nnenna Freelon CD I have in my music library. I hope number seven will bring Nnenna much luck. This one is a winner!
